I recently was asked to speak at the 2024 NAMIWalks Coachella Valley fundraiser! If you missed it, here is the speech:

"Hello, my name is Tiffany Chang. I am a high school student from the Coachella Valley. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to NAMI for allowing me to share my personal journey with mental health challenges, which have profoundly impacted both my life and my family's. In first grade, I witnessed a close relative grapple with severe depression. Each day was a struggle for her; even the simple act of getting out of bed felt monumental, and joy seemed elusive. Fortunately, with the right professional help and treatment, she was able to recover and rebuild her life. Over the years, I have seen other family members face similar battled, including another relative who struggled with a drug addiction and one who became homeless due to untreated mental health issues. One of my closet family members even came close to attempting suicide.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I faced my own mental health challenges. The isolation led to feelings of depression, difficulties managing daily tasks, and ultimately, an eating disorder. Observing my withdrawal, my parents decided to bring a dog into our home, Tootsie, and later Daisy, became essential to my healing journey. Their companionship lifted my spirits and provided hope during a critical time, making me feel not alone. However, managing my mental health continues to be an ongoing process. Each day presents its own challenges, but the unconditional love and support from my dogs, family, and friends remind me to take things one day at a time.

Coming from an Asian background, my family and I initially hesitated to address these issues due to the significant stigma surrounding mental health in our community. Sadly, many individuals don't seek help until it's too late. This emphasizes the importance of organizations like NAMI- they raise awareness, combat stigma, and inspire individuals to seek support.

I am truly honored to represent NAMI today and deeply appreciate everyone here for coming to support this cause. Together, we can make a meaningful difference for those facing mental health challenges. Remember, you are not alone."
